History Center Makes the Past Come Alive!

The history of Des Plaines came alive in an Orchard Place Elementary School fifth grade classroom!

The students received a visit from the Des Plaines History Center's Associate Curator Ms. Olivia Cimino who taught them about the Native American tribes that lived in the area.

They learned that the three tribes who inhabited the area consisted of the Chippewa, the Ottawa and the Potowatami.

Ms. Cimino brought a large wooden box into the classroom filled with ancient artifacts, ranging from shoes to handmade woven bowls to farming tools.

The fifth graders learned how the Native Americans made their farming tools and that some tools were made out of deer bones.

The students particularly enjoyed having the unique opportunity to touch and examine all of the artifacts up close.
