Students Learn All About Fire Safety

Students Learn All About Fire Safety
Orchard Place

During Fire Safety Week the Des Plaines Fire Department and paramedics visited Orchard Place Elementary School to conduct a fire safety presentation for kindergarten through 2nd grade students.

Fire Inspector Mr. Jimmy Brooks started the presentation by asking the students what number to call in case of an emergency. All of the students shouted "911!"

Mr. Brooks explained how lighters and matches are not toys and should only be used by an adult.

He then held up a smoke detector and asked them if they had them in their homes.

He explained that the batteries need to be checked multiple times throughout the year to make sure they are all in working condition and he pressed the button so the students could hear what it sounded like.

Mr. Brooks showed the students a drawing of a house with routes to get out of a bedroom in case there was a fire at night when everyone was sleeping.

He explained that, depending on the situation, you would either go out the front door or the bedroom window.

Mr. Brooks had student volunteers demonstrate how to put the back of their hand on the door to determine if it was hot or cold and stressed the importance of crawling out of the house if it was full of smoke.

Another student demonstrated how to exit through a window, placing a blanket over the base of it and then crawling out.

At the end of the presentation a firefighter showed the students how he changes into his gear, including his oxygen tank and mask.

The firefighter spoke to the students with his mask on, demonstrating that even though his voice might sound frightening, it's not something to be afraid of.

Students were excited to have the chance to go outside and see a fire truck in person.

Thank you to Mr. Brooks and his team for coming out to educate the students of Orchard Place!
