First Grade Sharing Circle and Number Corner
Orchard Place Elementary School first graders in Ms. Laura Rosland's class start every Monday with a sharing circle followed by activities in the number corner.
Once gathered on the floor in a circle, the students take turns talking about what they did over the weekend.
They pass around a purple teddy bear and when the bear gets to each person it is their time to speak.
Play zones, a trampoline park and a rodeo were just some of the fun things the students and teacher shared from this past weekend.
After the circle, the students participated in the "number corner," where they learned about the month of February and how it is unique in that it only has 28 days.
The students practiced writing the date on their whiteboards.
The shape they were studying that day was the triangle and they practiced drawing them on their whiteboards.
The talked about how many sides a triangle has and they learned the new words "vertices" and "congruent."
Students then practiced a math problem involving the number 98, creating an addition or subtraction problem to equal that number.
Some of the students broke the problem down by adding multiples of 10, while others created subtraction problems.
The students were excited to show Ms. Rosland the different types of problems they came up with to equal the number 98.
The final number corner task of the day involved collecting and connecting plastic "unifix" cubes. This helping the students further grasp the concept of numbers.
A student was randomly selected to collect the unifix cubes. She spun a spinner to determine the number of cubes to gather. After collecting that number, she connected the cubes and marked the corresponding number on the class chart.
