New Violinists Master Bow Placement

Orchard Place Elementary School fifth graders are learning how to play the violin under the direction of music teacher Ms. Katherine Koeppen.

Specifically the students have been working on practicing "D" and "A" strings, bow holds, bow care and positions "1" and "2."

Using their fingers, the students played a 4-beat-per-measure warm up activity while watching a video, as Ms. Koeppen walked around the room, helping them tune their violins.

Using their fingers, the students practiced "FACE" and "EGBDF Picado" and then moved on to the classic songs "Hot Cross Buns" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

Then is was time to learn how to properly hold their bows.

Using a pencil, Ms. Koeppen showed them where their finger placement needed to be.

The students worked on balancing the violin bow with two fingers and on bow positions "1" and "2," first by holding the bow and then by positioning it over the violin.

Once they had some time to practice on their own, they played "Hot Cross Buns" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb" with their bows.

The new musicians are looking forward to performing in their upcoming concert in December!
