Fourth grade students in Ms. Katherine Koeppen's music class at Orchard Place Elementary School are learning how to play percussion instruments.

Ms. Koeppen started the class by placing various drums and tambourines in a circle on the carpet.

Each student was assigned an instrument and as she played a rhythm on her drum she asked the students to repeat what she had played.

The students then played beats based on how many syllables they had in their name, going around in the circle.

First a student would say their name and play the beats with it and then the other students would say that student's name and play the same beats.

The exercise continued with students playing beats based on what their favorite food was.

The students switched their instruments around every few minutes so they all had a chance to play each type of drum or tambourine.

They had a fun time learning all about the percussion instruments and finding their rhythm together.
